Alain Polo

Alain Polo is a young artist from the "Academie des Beaux-Arts" in Kinshasa (graduate in 2006). He formed a group called SADI (Solidarity Artists for Integral Development) with Trésor Mukonkole, Yves Sambu, Kruchna Mongovo-Masangila and Fransix Tenda. Their works focuse on collective performances in popular areas of Kinshasa and the "village of erosion" of Mount Gafula whose houses collapsed each in heavy rain. They paint on pieces of insulated walls and houses on the brink of collapse. Photographs, performances, video are major media of Alain Polo, not hesitating to have fun with fashion.

Alain Polo also performs intimate photographic self-portraits on the ideal of "beauty" that he tries to embody its own transformation. His first series ("Jeune Homme à la Veste" -Young Man with Jacket- 2008 ; "Le Dormeur" -The Sleeper- 2009 ; "My Sweet Drawing" 2009 ; "Talon Aiguille" -High Heels- 2009) reveal intimate moments of doubt about his identity. Photo setting showing only disjointed fragments of his body, looks of unacknowledged envy on himself or a close, dark and cozy atmosphere of his world (the 4 walls of his room), some elements of pageantry of a fantasized reality, often taking from an imaginary world saw in magazines, reflections in broken mirrors, all open onto other vertigo that Congolese society does not always understand.
